Eagle Slough Tour on June 20, 2011
About 25 attended our last SIMNA meeting/field trip to Eagle Slough Natural Area. A stiff breeze kept insects away for the most part, and it also helped with humidity. We were impressed with all the volunteer efforts that went into making this former ugly dumping site into a nice nature trail complete with interpretive signage and viewing/photography deck. Our tourguide was ESNA key supporter, Greg Myer. He explained the history of the area which was once a railway. Remnants of that railway can still be seen. He pointed out the Bald Cypress trees which are part of the slough's attractions. Also, he told us that the area was a great birding spot during migration periods, and also about some of the other wildlife which uses the area.

Hi SIMNA!

Well, we had a nice Saturday at the Birding Festival--no rain, pleasant temps, and a steady flow of bird lovers. Thanks to all who volunteered!

If you have ever seen a Rose-breasted Grosbeak(pictured in the post before this one), you know what a treat it is. But have you ever seen a Blue Grosbeak? Well, if you visit the Nature Center bird-watching room, you have a good chance of seeing one. I myself just added it to my life list on Saturday. This pic below is from a website, but I hope to get my own photo of the real thing in this coming week. Hurry to see it, it may be a fleeting Kodak moment. Be patient!!!

P.S. Blue Grosbeaks are hard to spot in the wild, and just the very southern tip of Indiana is included in their breeding range.

Ohio Valley Birding Festival

The 2011 Ohio Valley Birding Festival will
begin on April 27 through May 1 with lots of activities for all ages. Please go to www.ohiovalleybirdingfestival.org/ for the schedule of events. Keynote speaker will be Dr. Eldon Greij, founder of Birder's World magazine.
Event is presented by Evansville Audubon Society.
Many Master Naturalists will be volunteering their time and talents to make this festival educational for all.

April 17, 2011 Wildflower Walk

Greetings!
You missed a great nature encounter if you were not at USI for the monthly SIMNA gathering/tailgate meeting on April 17.

A group of approx. 14 went on a wildflower ID walk in the rich woodlands at the back of USI on well-used trails. We encountered Jack-in-the- Pulpit (some large specimens), Trout Lily going to seed, Wood Phlox, blooming Mayapple, Giant Star Chickweed(yes we have a beautiful native one), a patch of Iris Cristata which we wish was blooming, Dutchman's Breeches, and Goldenseal, much more!

We were glad to have UE botanist, Ann Powell, with us to help with verification, scientific names, and great books to show details.
Weather was perfect, and before we knew it, we had spent 2 hours out there.

Everyone enjoyed Kathy's Trail Cookies also, served out of the trunk of her car!

Please join us on May 16 for our next SIMNA gathering as we meet at The Evansville Museum for a special reception to new IMNs and a customized tour of Pat Brentano's exhibit. More info to come on that.

After a bit of an unplanned hiatus, the blog is up and running again with plans to update it monthly. In the sidebar to the right, you'll find links to the SIMNA meeting minutes and bylaws; information about upcoming programs, events, and volunteer opportunities; and news articles featuring Wesselman Nature Society and SIMNA. Near the bottom, you can find links to photos submitted by SIMNA members and archives of past years' posts.

July 2010 meeting minutes

Southwestern Indiana Master Naturalists Association met on July 19th, 2010 at the Oaklyn Library in Evansville IN for our first meeting of the new club year, with Kathy Eicher presiding. Last month’s minutes were approved. Please consider this your reminder that dues for the new club year (July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011) were reduced to $10 per person per year.

There was discussion on the club year, the bylaws, and the blog site, with good ideas presented. A micro-committee of Eleanor and Pat Savage was formed to study the by-laws. A survey was proposed for August or September, to learn about member preferences for meeting day, time, place and ideas for program topics and leaders. Treasurer Joan Andersen reported a balance of $1,420.93.

Our program presenters were Pat and Eleanor Savage and their topic was Nature Centers Visited. Pat showed great slides from 5 of the different Nature Centers that they had visited.

Great Plains Nature Center in Wichita, KS www.gpnc.org:  282 acres, including the Koch Habitat Hall, the Coleman Auditorium, a wildlife observatory, the Owl's Nest Gift Shop, a classroom and an office wing. Slides included some great exhibits, informative maps and displays in a beautiful plains setting. Great gift shop ideas.

Wolf Park in Battle Ground, IN www.wolfpark.org:  7 acres devoted to the study of wolf packs, including coyotes, foxes, and a bison herd. Interpretive programs including wolf/bison demonstrations and Howl Night (guaranteed hair-raising).

Wildlife Discovery Center in Lake Forest, IL www.cityoflakeforest.com:  800 acres total with large variety of herps, especially snakes, especially venomous snakes. Also free flying raptor programs. Log on to listen to the Kookaburras laugh.

North Park Village Nature Center in Chicago www.chicagoparkdistrict.com:  46 acres with trails and discovery room including a bee hive and Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights.

Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Lincoln Park, IL www.chias.org:  6 acres affiliated with the Chicago Academy of Science, certified green roof, butterfly haven, and great interactive bird id stations. They have a staff of 75 and 200,000 visitors a year.

Further business included the hole on the boardwalk trail at Howell Wetlands, which has been filled and seems to be holding. Keep Evansville Beautiful is conducting their annual litter survey – please contact Kathy or Eleanor or Pat if you are willing to help.

Program “Herpetology” by Eleanor Zitek Savage

Herpetology is the study of reptiles and amphibians. Herpe means “to creep”. Amphibian means “double life”. Amphibians have water permeable skin, reptiles have covered skin.

Natasha is WNS black rat snake. Uses Jacobsen organ to “smell” by flicking tongue in and out across top of mouth. (Editor’s note – while checking spelling, learned that all vertebrates have this organ. Only a few mammals actually use it – lion and deer.) Can’t hear – no external ears. No eye lids. Arboreal (moves among trees).

Boris is WNS bull snake. Dislocates jaw to swallow mice.

There are four main species of poisonous snakes in Indiana. They include the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake, the Cottonmouth, the Northern Copperhead and Timber Rattlesnakes. The very good news is that most of these snakes live in very specific areas of the state, none noted in Vanderburgh County.

WNS Tiger Salamander – has gills and no feet in larval stage. Eats live insects and bugs. 22 species of salamanders in IN.

Darth Invader is WNS Cane Toad – invasive from Central and South America. Introduced to Australia and Hawaii to eradicate sugar cane beetles (which they really don’t eat). Grow up to 30 pounds – eat our native frogs and toads. Produce neuro-toxins on shoulders – DON’T KEEP AS PETS.

Treasurer’s report $1,470.93. We received another $250 for the KEB litter survey.

Southwestern Indiana Master Naturalists Association met for our summer picnic on June 21 at 6pm at the Howell Wetlands Conservation Station. The soaring temperature did not deter 20 members from good camaraderie and great food! Many thanks to everyone for providing a meal fit for royalty! Pot luck is really lucky when you are a part of this group of gourmets! We also enjoyed a green tree frog expedition – heard ‘em, didn’t get to see ‘em.

Treasurer Joan Andersen reported a balance in our account of $1,305.93. This is possible primarily because of the folks who have volunteered their time and energy to participate in the Keep Evansville Beautiful litter survey. Each year this effort has added $250 to our treasury. Thanks again to those volunteers.

President Kathy Eicher discussed the new State program for IMN’s:

Certified Advanced IMN - $10 annually to IMN, plus 30 hours of volunteer time and 8 hours of training annually. The $10 is an administrative fee to offset the cost of pins, certificates, newsletters, Annual Gathering costs, etc., and will be set aside for use only by the IMN program. You are requested to record and submit your hours to IMN as well as our sponsor WNS.

Certified Active IMN - $10 annually to IMN, plus staying connected without turning in your hours (we request that you report your hours to WNS regardless).

Certified Inactive IMN – one-time $10 to IMN. You will not receive newsletter.
This State program starts this year. Any questions may be directed to Jody Heaston, IMN Coordinator, jheaston@dnr.in.gov

In recognition of this new program at the State level, motion was made, seconded, and carried that SIMNA reduce our annual dues to $10 per person. *That’s right – in order to belong to our association you merely have to complete the Master Naturalist course through Wesselman Nature Society and pay annual dues of $10. The pot luck picnic alone is worth that price!* (And this offer is good past midnight, you don’t have to call now!)

Just a reminder that our year runs from July 1 to June 30, so this year’s dues are now due. We don’t send out any other reminder, and you will stay on our e-mail list until you actually request to be removed. We truly hope you will be an active member - the real benefit will be yours.

We also had several members in attendance at the Native and Invasive Plant Conference at UE on June 19. The program included an excellent pictorial of Goose Pond by Sharon Sorenson and a keynote “Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants” by Dr. Douglas Tallamy, author of an eye-opening book of the same topic.

Our next meeting is scheduled for July 19 at 6pm at Oaklyn Library on Oak Hill Road. According to Vice Presidents Eleanor and Pat Savage, the program promises to be worthwhile!

Spend a casual evening in Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve as we stroll along the trails between the Nature Center and Odonata Pond, stopping along the way to taste fine wines. Add great food and a charming atmosphere to the mix, and this is the perfect autumn celebration!

Pioneer Days at Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve

Tuesday September 28th to Friday October 1st

There are two shifts: 8:30 to 11:30 AM and 11:30 to 2:00 PM. We’re looking for people who can talk about (and when possible, demonstrate) the following:

how the pioneers made pots and soap
what wildlife they would have encountered
what weapons they might have used
how they tanned hides and spun wool
their cooking methods and the food they ate
what toys children played with
what games children played
edible plants that were available then
how people traveled
what tools they used

We’re also looking for hike leaders and volunteers who can assist the presenters.

There will be several hundred children in small groups (15-20) who will move with their group from station to station every 15 minutes. So the maximum talking time for each subject will be fifteen minutes, repeated every 15 minutes for your entire shift. According to the state IMN newsletter, in 2008 there were 13 Master Naturalist classes, producing more than 100 graduates. Altogether, there are currently over 585 certified Indiana Master Naturalists.

GRATITUDE!
>> Heidi Doss extended thanks to everyone who helped with the Maple Sugarbush Festival this year. The event would NOT have been possible without volunteers. Early reports show that it was a very good year, with great attendance and many repeat customers!

>> The entry garden is starting to bloom, and work on it will begin again soon. Stop by to see the flowers, and many thanks to Dennis & Carol Slow and other volunteers for all their hard work!

>> A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped clear trails after February's big ice storm. As of the March meeting, all of WWNP's trails were reopened, to the public's amazement.

>> Thanks are due to Mike Seib for constructing fancy new enclosures for the nature center's resident reptiles. Next time you're in the neighborhood, stop in and check them out!

>> Finally, thank you to Dr. Paul Doss for the informative presentation on Global Warming, given after the March SIMNA meeting!

BUSINESS!
>> From now on, attendance at SIMNA meetings counts for one volunteer hour. Also, if you have finished your initial 40 hours, DON'T stop keeping track! Reporting your hours to Lauren or Susan helps them obtain grants and other funding.

>> At the May meeting, we will be electing the next slate of officers. Jane Magary is accepting nominations for all four officer positions, so please contact her ASAP if you are interested! You may nominate yourself or suggest others that Jane might contact, but you may only officially nominate others if you have their permission first. Jane can be reached at jmagary@dpat.com or (812) 473-6535.

The President runs the meetings and helps deal with official group business (Jane promises it's very easy); the Vice President books speakers and programs for our meetings, and may be asked to run a meeting or two in Jane's absence; the Treasurer keeps track of the group's account, collects dues, and writes checks for donations and activities; the Secretary takes notes at meetings and sends out the minutes via email and postal mail. Gena has offered to continue maintenance of the group's blog site (http://masternaturalists.blogspot.com), so the new secretary need only handle the minutes and announcements.

>> Dues for the upcoming year (July 2009 - June 2010) are due to the treasurer on or before July 1st. Dues are curently set at $15 per person or $25 per couple. As our group grows, we will by necessity become more diligent about collecting dues. So far, we have used our dues and fundraising money to donate $250 toward the cost of supplies for the free Family Activities at the Ohio Valley Birding Festival!

>> If you have taken an enrichment course since becoming a Master Naturalists (Flying WILD, Project WILD, Project WET, Project Webfoot, Hoosier Riverwatch, Project Learning Tree, Go FishIN, etc.), please bring your certificates of completion in so that Susan can make a copy for your volunteer file. Also, if you have taken Project Webfoot and aren't sure what to do with the curriculum materials they send, WNS would be glad to have them!

>> The National Resources Education Center (NREC) is offering a Monarchs, Monitoring, Milkweed, & Migration workshop at Howell Wetlands from 9 AM - 4 PM on Saturday, July 25th:

Monarch Larva Monitoring Project (MLMP)
Hands-on training for anyone interested in monarch butterflies or monarch monitoring projects for home, schools or parks. Learn about the life cycle of an individual monarch traveling from Indiana to the mountains of Mexico and back to the United States, highlighting the threats to this migration phenomenon. Using live monarch eggs, larvae and adults, identify all stages of a monarch's life cycle and tag adult butterflies. Develop strategies for creating Monarch Waystations and experiment with monarch curriculum for grades K-8. Conducted by Ann Richardson and Robert Richardson, Regional Trainers for the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project, a citizen science project developed at the University of Minnesota. Sponsored by Indiana Project WILD, Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Backyard Habitat Seminars
Kathy Eicher is spearheading an initiative to spread the word about the National Wildlife Federation's Backyard Habitat program. The sessions would be great continuing education opportunities for all Master Naturalists! The first one is this Sat. March 21 from 9am-12pm on the basic elements of a wildlife habitat. Participants will learn how to get a backyard habitat certified with National Wildlife Federation, with the hope that a community-wide effort will begin, inspiring others to get involved with creating their own green spaces for wildlife.

The next two seminars are on Sat. May 30 and Sept. 12 from 9-12noon. Then Advanced Enrichment classes will be offered following those Basic Classes from 1pm-4pm. Guest speakers will have topics on making a rain garden, attracting pollinators, and lawn reduction, and more. Ohio Valley Birding Fest
The second annual OVBF is scheduled for May 1 - 3. Building upon last year's event, there will be birding trips, workshops, lectures, children's activities, and more. At our last meeting, those in attendance voted to give $250 from our treasury as a sponsorship toward the free children's activities planned for Saturday, May 2nd. Master Naturalists are also being asked to consider volunteering for the kids' activities. If you are able to help, please contact Carol Pettys at pettys1234@aol.com. We opened our first meeting of 2009 with a fantastic presentation by USI geology professor Dr. Jim Durbin. Jim's talk was all about karst, a fitting topic since we live in a karst-heavy region. To continue the theme, Gena has agreed to organize a group trip to Marengo Cave sometime this Spring. If you are interested in participating, please send an email to the group account (masternaturalists@gmail.com) and you'll be put on a cave trip mailing list.

In addition, the Lost River Conservation Association is offering three public field featuring "an orientation to the classic portion of Indiana's Lost River karst system." For information on trip options, click here.

Business

Our treasury has grown to a healthy $1184.88, including a whopping $109.88 earned at the Wild Birds Unlimited holiday wrapping event. Thanks to Jane Magary, Kate Lynch, Karen Selby, and Cynthia Nicholson for volunteering their time, and thanks to Wild Birds Unlimited for the opportunity! Jane suggested that we think about considering a small sponsorship of some kind for the upcoming Ohio Valley Birding Festival.

The third Indiana Master Naturalist class is now in progress! Previous graduates are permitted to sit in on individual session, but you must make a reservation and pay a $10 fee. Sunday Sustainability Series at WWNP
This four-part adult seminar series (Energy, Economy, and Environment) discusses interrelationship and interdependency of energy and economy on different facets of our environment. Programs led by Dr. Greg Valentine, Director of the Center for Economic Education at the University of Southern Indiana (USI). The remaining topic in this series is Land Fills/Global Warming, scheduled from 2 - 4 PM on February 22 at the WWNP nature center.

The curriculum is sponsored by the IN Council for Economic Education. The series is free for those attending thanks to platinum sponsor Hafer Associates, a local architectural, engineering, planning and interior design firm.

Backyard Habitat Class
WNS staff & docents, with the assistance of SWIMNA & SWIMGA members, are organizing a new community-wide certified backyard habitat initiative, an established program of the National Wildlife Federation. WNS will offer quarterly backyard habitat seminars for individuals desiring to apply the concepts to their home, school, business, organization, or other properties. WNS hopes to encourage individuals to take an interest in fostering community outreach efforts.

Both basic introduction classes and advanced topic classes will be offered one Saturday a season. The basic class will run on a Saturday morning, and cover basics of wildlife habitat requirements and backyard solutions. The advanced topics class will run the same afternoon, and will cover three topics that vary each time, such as composting, rain gardens, rain barrels, lawn reduction, reduced chemical use and alternatives, attracting various flora and fauna, and many more.

Reptile Docents Needed

Lauren is searching for a few SIMNA members who would have an interest in receiving training to safely handle and tend to day-to-day care of the reptiles in the nature preserve's collection.

Ideally, she would like to train docents who would have a desire to spend some time at WWNP on the weekends especially, but also some during the week when visitors might be in the nature center. Docents would be trained to handle the animals and do impromptu talks with visitors in the lobby area at various times throughout the day. Visitor interest in the reptiles is high, and they are more than appreciative to actually get to safely touch or hold a snake while visiting.

Additionally, docents would help with the reptiles' day-to-day care, making sure each has fresh water, clean cages, and gets fed on schedule (for turtles that may mean checking the care log for daily feeding or picking up minnows from the bait store, for snakes it would mean thawing mice for feeding every 1-2 weeks).

The WWNP reptile collection currently includes a bull snake, a black rat snake, two red-eared sliders, and a Alligator snapping turtle. Six box turtles will be joining the menagerie soon!

Maple Sugarbush Festival

A breakfast of pancakes with real maple syrup, sausage, and the choice of orange juice, milk, or coffee will be served inside the Nature Center. Ongoing programs throughout each day teach those who attend about the natural processes taking place inside of trees, the history and process of maple syrup production, and why the end result is worth the effort. These programs includes guided walking tours through the Sugarbush, allowing firsthand observation of trees tapped and readily producing sap and further explanation of the evaporation process that condenses sap to the consistency of maple syrup.

The Maple Sugarbush Festival and Pancake Breakfast is a two-day event that is made possible through the participation of Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve staff and over 80 volunteers. Trees in the Preserve have been tapped since the early 70’s, and the Sugarbush festival has been an annual celebration for over thirty years.

Lost River karst field trips

Tours of Indiana's Lost River karst system are being offered by the Lost River Conservation Association (LRCA). These tours are free, open to the public, and will be done in your own vehicle. All tours are a GO - especially if it rains. Tours will involve moderate hiking at some stops, which are optional. We recommend sturdy footwear, long sleeve shirts, long pants (even in hot weather), camera, sunscreen, bug repellent, binoculars, etc. Reservations are not necessary.

These field trips will feature an orientation to the "classic portion" of Indiana's Lost River karst system. The tours will depart at 8 AM from the southeast corner of the town square in Orleans, Indiana (junction of SR 37 and SR 337). An orientation presentation begins at 7:40 AM. The tour will end at approximately 4:40 PM at the Orangeville Rise Nature Preserve. The stops en-route will include numerous roadside interpretive sites and opportunities to visit some significant features (i.e. the First Sink, the Terminus Zone, a major swallow hole, and the Elrod / Wesley Chapel Gulf). The route will provide views overlooking the valley of the Lost River in the Mitchell Plain and of the Springville Escarpment.

We believe that Indiana's Lost River karst system is so unique that it must be viewed in the context of the total river system to be fully appreciated. We also include samplings of the area's historic heritage to broaden your horizons. The goal is to promote the idea that the entire drainage basin of Indiana's Lost River is so unique and so rich in overall heritage resources that it is worthy of being designated a Wild & Scenic River and a World Heritage Site.

You may also choose to do the tour in two half-day increments. We return to Herle's Diner in Orleans for our lunch stop between noon and 1 PM, and present a special demonstration of karst groundwater flow."

This year's field trips are scheduled for April 4, June 6, and September 19. We can also schedule our own tour if we get together a group of six or more people.

Harvest Festival and Hayrides coming to WWNP!

The event formerly known as Haunted Hayrides will be getting a facelift this year and evolving into a mostly scare-free, family-friendly, educational set of activities that relate to the harvest season. The Harvest Festival will be held from 5 - 9 PM on October 24th and 25th at Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve.

We will need about 500 sweet gum "gumballs" and about 500 three- or four-inch pine cones for the kids' crafts area, so if you have either of these available on your property, please consider donating some! If you have gum or fir trees but don't have time to collect gumballs or pinecones, that's okay. We can find someone to come out and collect them.

The outline below is TENTATIVE, but gives a general idea of what we are hoping to put together. If you would like to act as lead organizer / chairperson of planning a specific area of the festival--or if you have contacts in the community who could help us plan or donate supplies -- we'd love to hear from you. If you would like to volunteer at the event, we'd love to hear that, too!

We are also looking for local businesses who would be interested in sponsoring a Halloween inflatable display along the hayride route for $150. Sponsors will be recognized in printed event materials and will be named on a sign at their sponsored inflatable. Sponsors can also underwrite a specific area of the festival (kids' crafts, speakers, a hay wagon, etc). Lauren Preske has requested that we save empty toilet paper rolls for her, as she frequently uses them for programs. You can bring your collected tubes to the nature center, but please indicate that they are for Lauren when you drop them off so that they can be set aside for her.

Canoe Evansville has agreed to schedule a special moonlight paddle for SIMNA members, to be held at Bluegrass Fish & Wildlife Area on Thursday, September 11th. The cost is $13.50 per person, and can be paid directly to Canoe Evansville manager Ashley on the evening of the paddle. John James Audubon State Park
Audubon State Park in Henderson probably has one of the best wildflower displays in the area.

Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve
Susan Haslip reports that the flowers are blooming, so head to WWNP and check it out!

St. Paul Nature Preserve
Take Highway 65 North. Once you pass St. Wendel Road on the left, watch for St. Paul's Church on the right. There is a small gravel parking area just past the church, and the entrance to the nature preserve is just past this parking area.

Hemmer Woods Nature Preserve
This is up near Buckskin IN. Great little woods – good for all woodland wildflowers including white Trout Lily. Also good for frogs and red headed woodpeckers.

Twin Swamps Nature Preserve
Later in the spring this is a great place to check out a display of Bluebells, unmatched anywhere in the area.

Hemlock Cliffs
This is a great hike anytime of year but right now is especially nice with a good flow of water over the cliffs and in the stream. Nice place to see Hepatica if you get out there very soon.

Help clean up Eagle Slough

Wesselman Nature Society has partnered with the Vanderburgh County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Four Rivers Resource Conservation and Development Area, and the Indiana Nature Conservancy to purchase 127 acres of wetlands north of Ellis Park and place it into conservation. Known historically as Eagle Slough, the area preserves a stand of bald cypress trees and provides valuable habitat for migratory birds. WNS is looking forward to drawing up a management plan and offering programs at Eagle Slough in the future.

Volunteers Needed for Kids' Pioneer Days

Scott and Lisa are seeking volunteers to help with Pioneer Days, an annual event for schoolchildren. Volunteers are needed from 8:30 - 12:00 each day of the festival.

Volunteers will be given a quick training of their activity each morning. School groups attending will split into small groups (12-15 students) with an adult and rotate around to as many of our activities as possible in their field trip time.

Volunteers are also needed to act as greeters each day, and to help with setup on Monday, April 21 from 10 AM to 2 PM and Tuesday through Friday from 7 - 9 AM.

Raptor Ambassador Program Docents Wanted

The new Raptor Ambassador Program (RAP) will be unveiled soon! In the June WNS newsletter, you’ll be able to read about the goals for the program, and be introduced to our 5 new birds (for a total of 7 in the program), including their names, species, and circumstance. In the meantime, there is a lot of behind the scenes activity going on, including cage renovations, bird training, and docent training.

WNS is currently seeking applicants who wish to train as raptor docents. There is no experience necessary to apply. However, certain criteria must be met. Docents must complete a 12 week docent class, and commit at least 4 hours a week to the program. Docents must have time in their schedules to care for the birds, and to use them in education programs. A total of five new docents will be accepted into the program this year, joining the five docents we currently have.

Since these docents will need to be highly specialized in their ability to care for and handle our raptors and use them in education programs, the chosen applicants will be required to take a 12 week class of intensive training on raptor care and handling. The class will be taught at WWNP by Lauren Preske, RAP Manager. The docent class will meet approximately once per week (day and time to be determined based on the schedules of the chosen applicants), then additional time will need to be spent by each docent intern to practice the skills taught in class.

The training will initially involve observation, learning techniques of care and handling, feeding, and cleaning cages. Once interns show competent skills, training will progress to include handling of the birds, then to giving educational programs with them. Docent interns should expect to invest 3-6 months before giving education programs with the birds.

The docent class will begin in June (date to be determined), and applications will be taken in May. If you are interested, please contact Lauren Preske at lpreske@wesselmannaturesociety.org and she will put you on a list of people to contact when the application process begins mid-May.

Groundbreaking at Howell Wetlands

Watch for exciting changes at Howell Wetlands! The construction on the Howell Wetlands building will finally begin this month. It has been a long journey to this point, with securing partners and funding, final design details for the structure, and all necessary approvals and permits. We are finally ready to break ground. The ceremony will be held on April 11 at 3 PM. There will be speakers, refreshments, and of course, the turning of soil. Please join us!

SIMNA Moonlight Paddle
Thursday, September 11

Canoe Evansville has agreed to schedule a special moonlight paddle for SIMNA members, to be held at Bluegrass Fish & Wildlife Area on September 11th. The cost is $13.50 per person, and can be paid directly to Canoe Evansville manager Ashley on the evening of the paddle. You MUST RESERVE YOUR SPOT BY MONDAY EVENING (Sept. 8th) so that I can tell Ashley how many people to expect. Email masternaturalists@gmail.com or call 812-204-8475.

Participants can choose to meet at the nature center at 6:30 PM on Thursday and take the shuttle out to Bluegrass, or you can meet the group at the second lake (I believe it is Loon Pit) at 7:00 PM. There has been talk of organizing a weekend trip to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore this season. Heidi Doss, who worked at the site as a National Parks Service naturalists, is willing to meet up with a SIMNA group at the Dunes either September 27 & 28 or October 4 & 5. Harvest Festival & Hayrides
October 24 & 25
5 - 9 PM

The event formerly known as Haunted Hayrides will be getting a facelift this year and evolving into a mostly scare-free, family-friendly, educational set of activities that relate to the harvest season.

We will need about 500 sweet gum "gumballs" and about 500 three- or four-inch pine cones for the kids' crafts area, so if you have either of these available on your property, please consider donating some! If you have gum or fir trees but don't have time to collect gumballs or pinecones, that's okay. We can find someone to come out and collect them.

The outline below is TENTATIVE, but gives a general idea of what we are hoping to put together. If you would like to act as lead organizer / chairperson of planning a specific area of the festival--or if you have contacts in the community who could help us plan or donate supplies -- we'd love to hear from you. If you would like to volunteer at the event, we'd love to hear that, too!

We are also looking for local businesses who would be interested in sponsoring a Halloween inflatable display along the hayride route for $150. Sponsors will be recognized in printed event materials and will be named on a sign at their sponsored inflatable. Sponsors can also underwrite a specific area of the festival (kids' crafts, speakers, a hay wagon, etc). Volunteer Opportunities

Just a reminder:  to obtain your IMN certification from the state, you need to log and turn in 40 hours of volunteer service. All of the volunteer activities organized through SIMNA and WNS count, as well as time spent attending workshops where you are learning naturalist teaching methods or preparing for a volunteer position (Project Learning Tree, Hoosier Riverwatch, etc). Attending SIMNA meetings does not count toward your 40 hours. However, if you give a presentation at a meeting, you can count that time and the prep time toward your volunteer hours.

Once you have completed your 40 hours, please continue to keep track of any time you spend volunteering for WNS programs and events. Susan can provide a form for tracking these hours.

The Southwestern Indiana Master Gardener Association is presenting a garden conference featuring an exciting keynote guest:  garden designer, author and columnist Jon Carloftis. Other topics include lawn care and equipment, culinary uses of herbs and edible weeds, rain gardens, using native plants and wildflowers, pruning, bulbs, sun plants, community supported agriculture, hostas, water gardens, a creative spirit inspired by the garden, seasons in the garden, and birdscaping.

Indiana Master Naturalist Fall Gathering

Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis is hosting the second annual statewide gathering of Master Naturalists in October. This conference is only open to those who have completed their 40 hours of service and received their certification from the state. Our next SIMNA meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 15th. We will begin at 6:00 with an insect hike led by Dr. Eric McCloud from USI's biology department. Hope to see everyone there!

Many thanks to Kathy, who is working hard to rehab the planting beds at the front entrance of the nature preserve. She has replanted with native species and labeled the new plants so they are both beautiful and educational.

"No hunting," "No vehicle traffic," "Foot traffic only," and "Natural Resource Area" signs have been posted at Eagle Slough, but motor vehicles and hunting is still going on. The advisory committee asks that NO ONE confront people out at Eagle Slough, especially if they are hunting. If you are hiking or working there and hear engine noise or gunfire, call the authorities.

For our July meeting, we gathered at the Evansville Museum. The weather did not cooperate with our plan to stargaze, but we checked out the summer sky in the Planetarium with no problems.

If you have completed your 40 hours of service and received your certification from the State, you can choose to order an Indiana Master Naturalist logo patch. To save on shipping, we are collecting names and payment and will send in a group order after the August meeting. If you'd like a patch, please give your name and $4 to Susan Haislip. The supplier will be cross-checking with the state lists, so please do not order a patch unless you are certified. We'll put together a second patch order in the fall or winter, to give newer graduates more time to complete their required hours.

Upcoming SIMNA activities:

On Thursday, July 31st, Heidi Doss will present a training on the topic of teaching children in the outdoors. The class will meet from 6 - 8:00 PM at the nature center. The class is limited to 15 people, so please email Gena at masternaturalists@gmail.com or call (812) 204-8475 if you wish to sign up. If you sign up but later realize you will not be able to attend, please let us know so we can offer your spot to someone else.

The next SIMNA meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 18 at 6:00 PM. We'll meet at the Nature Center and begin with SIMNA member Steve Pitt's presentation on the history of Pigeon Creek.

On Thursday, September 11th, Canoe Evansville will be offering a moonlight paddle exclusively for SIMNA. For our September 15th meeting, we're planning to take a hike at Howell Wetlands, since many Master Naturalists have not had a chance to visit the property. Don't worry--there are barely any bugs at all!

Lauren Preske has requested that we save empty toilet paper rolls for her, as she frequently uses them for programs. You can bring your collected tubes to the nature center, but please indicate that they are for Lauren when you drop them off so that they can be set aside for her.

Upcoming meetings and trips

>> Heidi Doss has arranged for Dr. Cris Hochwender, UE professor and SIMNA class instructor, to lead a tree ID hike for the group on Monday, June 23. We will meet at the WWNP nature center at 6:00 PM, and our regular meeting will follow the hike. Again, we will NOT be meeting on the third Monday, but will be meeting on June 23 instead.

>> In July, we will not have a regular meeting. Instead, the group is invited to meet at the Evansville Museum on Tuesday, July 8 for a Planetarium show followed by stargazing through a telescope on the Museum's back lawn until 9:30 PM (weather permitting). We will meet in the front lobby at 7:30. If you wish to attend the Planetarium show, please arrive before 7:45 PM, as there can be no late admission into the dome. >> SIMNA dues have been revised to $15 per individual and $25 per couple / family for the 2008/2009 year. Since graduates of the 2007 class paid a higher rate last year, the members voted to "grandfather in" anyone who paid dues last year for the upcoming group year (June 2008 - July 2009).

Birding Festival a success!

The first-ever Ohio Valley Birding Festival, held May 1 - 4, was a success!

Jane Magary says, "Family Day was a very successful first year event. Carol Pettys co-ordinated a dozen activity stations for youngsters, along with all the volunteers to staff the activities. Most of the volunteers were Master Naturalists. All the activities were well attended, even requiring special dispatch to refurbish the suet feeder supplies. To satisfy hungry attendees as well as hungry volunteers, the Bible Center grilled lunch for us. Additional workshops during the day included Debbie Goedde's gourd decorating and "Fun with Owl Puke" popularly presented by our own Gena Garrett. Home Depot provided 72 bird house kits for a bird house building clinic in the amphitheater. The grand finale was a raptor show, with a huge attendance and a delightful close to an outstanding day."

Susan Haislip says, "The event was a great success with over two hundred people taking part in a wide variety of birding activities throughout the weekend. The birding hikes/trips were very popular, with attendees recording scores of birds - from the many migrating warbler species to black necked stilts. The many Family Day activities hosted by the Evansville Audubon Society and the WNS Master Naturalists were enjoyed by all who attended. Lectures, raptor shows, bird banding and various workshops at both Wesselman Woods and Audubon State Park provided a diverse offering for novices and experienced birders alike. Many thanks to all the birding enthusiasts and other talented folk who volunteered their time to put forth this quality environmental program for the community. The Steering Committee would like to hear your comments!"

Carol Pettys sent a note thanking all the Master Naturalists who volunteered their time and talents to help in the children's area.

>> The Natural Resources Education Center, based in Indianapolis, offers lots of excellent educational workshops throughout the year, and they have an email list you can join to receive upcoming program info. There is also an Indiana Master Naturalist listserv that you can join once you've completed your 40 hours. Remember, SIMNA meetings don't count toward your volunteer hours, but time spent at naturalist trainings and workshops can count!

April 2008

We started our April meeting with a wildflower hike along the mini-loop at the nature center. One the hike, we saw lots of wildflowers: nbsp;jack in the pulpit, rue anemone (or false rue...we weren't sure!), yellow violet, spring beauty, Solomon's Seal, bluebell, Jacob's Ladder, white and red trillium. Se also saw a Pileated woodpecker, and a sharp-shinned hawk on the hunt! Thanks to Heidi for suggesting the hike, and thanks to Jane for the delicious snacks we enjoyed afterwards! Meeting Minutes

Many interesting birds have been seen at WWNP lately, including rose breasted grosbeaks, indigo buntings, and prothonotary warblers.

WWNP is looking for someone to cook lunch for the Wednesday work crew. The position will require about 5 hours of work a week, and will pay $8 per hour.

WNS is accepting applications for an executive director. Applicants must have fundraising, management, and / or nonprofit experience. Interested parties should contact Vic Chamness (get contact info from Susan).

There is need of someone who is knowledgeable about WWNP (or willing to be trained) who can staff the desk and greet guests at the nature center. Must be friendly and willing to learn!

Jackie Crowley, Master Naturalist and seasonal naturalist at Audubon State Park in Henderson, has put out a call to arms. Invasive garlic mustard is taking over at Audubon and needs to be pulled! Audubon will provide trash bags, park maps, and a picture of garlic mustard to anyone willing to spend a day hiking and pulling invasives. Stop at the front desk and ask Sally for supplies and for the IMN sign in sheet -- you can count hours toward your Master Naturalist certification.

Because the official organizational year runs July 1 - June 30, we will be seeking nominations for officers and committee chairs at the May meeting.

Many, many thanks to everyone who helped with the Ohio Valley Birding Festival! The first-year event was a success, and the weather was nearly perfect!

Eagle Slough
Susan announced that Wesselman Nature Society has partnered with the Vanderburgh County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Four Rivers Resource Conservation and Development Area, and the Indiana Nature Conservancy to purchase 127 acres of wetlands north of Ellis Park and place it into conservation. Known historically as Eagle Slough, the area preserves a stand of bald cypress trees and provides valuable habitat for migratory birds. WNS is looking forward to drawing up a management plan and offering programs at Eagle Slough in the future. If you're interested in helping clean up the property, a group will be gathering at the North entrance of Ellis Park at 8:00 AM on Saturday, April 26th. Ohio Valley Birding Festival

Birding enthusiasts and novices alike will want to be sure to mark their calendars for a new event this spring in celebration of International Migratory Bird Month. Wesselman Nature Society has partnered with the Evansville Audubon Society, Evansville's Wild Birds Unlimited store and John James Audubon State Park to bring four days of birding excitement to Evansville and the surrounding region on May 1–4, 2008.

A whole host of activities are being planned for birders (or potential birders) of all ages and skill levels. Guided hikes to area birding hotspots such as Howell Wetlands, Hovey Lake, Bluegrass Fish and Wildlife Area and the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge will showcase a variety of native and migratory bird species. Various lectures and workshops will be offered, including topics such as photographing birds, making gourd birdhouses, and providing backyard habitat for birds. Special Guest Stan Tekiela, author of Birds of Indiana, will also be on hand to share his birding expertise and autograph copies of his books.

Saturday, May 3rd will be a special day for children and families. Join us at Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve to experience a full day of family birding fun! Children will have many opportunities throughout the day to participate in hands-on learning activities related to birds and their environment. A bird banding demonstration, family hike and a live raptor show will make this a day you won't want to miss!

We are offering two shifts for volunteers who can help out with the kids' activities. during Family Day on May 3: 9:30 am - 12:30 pm; and 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm. You may opt for one shift, or choose to work both. All of these activities are easy enough to learn that you'll need no preparation. All supplies will be provided for you. Below are the stations we'll be offering. If something specific appeals to you please let us know. Otherwise, simply contact Susan (812-479-0771 ext. 100 or shaislip@wesselmannaturesociety.org), indicating which shift(s) you would like to work. After that, all you'll need to do is dress for the weather and show up for your appointed shift!

Meeting Minutes
September 17, 2007

Jane welcomed everyone and asked if there were any proposed changes to the minutes from the August meeting. There were not. Eldon Scott could not be at the meeting but Jane reported that the Association now had 10 paid members and a treasury balance of $500.

The WNS education committee is soliciting MN alumni input on test and course content in preparation for the next Master Naturalist class beginning in January. Suggestions were made including that there could be an essay component where participants actually perform observation and interpretation. Comments will be forwarded to the committee

Jane made the group aware that the Evansville Parks Department was asking residents to complete an online survey regarding their interests in Evansville parks and recreation. A number in attendance had already completed the survey and felt it was worthwhile. The survey can be accessed through the following website: www.usi.edu/parksurvey.asp
Lauren told the group that Fall Flutterby was a great success and thanked everyone that helped with the event. The evening insect hike was rescheduled for September 29th because of rain. She asked the group to think about more possible activities for adults during next year’s event. Some suggestions given included Monarch tagging, instruction on raising butterflies, and details on how to be a Monarch way station.

Jane distributed the new WNS Program Guide to give everyone a feel for the types of programs they might be asked to assist with in the future.

Susan shared that plans for the first ever Ohio Valley Birding Festival were coming along nicely and that members of the Steering Committee were very excited about this new event. A week of hikes, lectures, workshops and activities will focus on educating people about migratory birds and the importance of protecting and providing habitat to ensure their survival. The event would be held over a number of days, but primarily occur on the weekend of May 2-4, 2008. She asked that all interested Master Naturalists please reserve the date now because there would be plenty of opportunity for docents to assist during the festival. Committees will start forming soon. Those specifically interested in helping plan or assist with the children’s activity area were encouraged to attend the Flying Wild curriculum training to be held on November 17th. Those in attendance offered a variety of suggestions for activities and sponsors. Susan will forward these on to the Steering Committee.

Lauren gave an impromptu tour of the newly renovated raptor facilities. She’s very busy training docents and new raptors! Master Naturalists with an interest in becoming a raptor handler are invited to speak to Lauren about being included in the next raptor docent training class.

Our next meeting will be held at the nature center at 6:30 PM on Monday, October 15. Heidi has arranged for Chuck Price, Professor of Science Education at USI, to give a presentation on the USI Bluebird Trail. Dr. Price will begin his talk at 6:30 sharp, so don't be late!

I could definitely use help during the workshops by trained Master Naturalists. This is a hands-on workshop for all who attend, as they assist with banding, recording information, and releasing banded birds. Generally, only trained hands assist with removal of birds from the net due to the difficulty of removing them, this is where I need help!
This will also be excellent training so that you can assist with the Ohio Valley Bird Festival during the first weekend May of 2008."

Lois Schmidt provided wonderful snacks for the meeting. Thanks, Lois!

Eldon and Jane are working on getting a tax ID number for SIMNA, and will set up a bank account for the group. The bylaws have been amended to state that in the event that the SIMNA group dissolves, any remaining assets will be donated to Wesselman Nature Society.

The KEB Litter Survey has been completed, and SIMNA will receive $250 from Keep Evansville Beautiful for the brand-new treasury! Thanks to everyone who helped with the survey!

( 2 ) Bird Festival

Mark your calendars! The first-ever Evansville-area bird festival is being planned for May 1 - 4, 2008. Wesselman Nature Society is joining forces with the local Wild Birds Unlimited, the Evansville Audubon Society, Audubon State Park in Henderson, and SIMNA to create a birding education festival. SIMNA has been asked to handle the kids' craft areas, and there will be lots of volunteer opportunities associated with the event as a whole. Julie from Audubon State Park will be presenting a Flying Wild workshop sometime this Fall to help us gear up for the kids' programming. Stay tuned for more news about this exciting event!

( 3 ) Master Naturalist Geology Field Trip with Professor Paul Doss

Date: Saturday, August 11
Time: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Location: We will meet at the Doss farm (14501 Big Cynthiana Road) at 8:00 AM

From there, we will carpool to locations in the Hoosier National Forest. Tentative stops include Hemlock Cliffs Nature Preserve and a “world-class” roadcut at SR 37 and I-64. You/We will return to the Doss farm around 5:00 PM.

The option exists to camp somewhere in Hoosier (and the Dosses may choose to stay and camp!). If you are interested in camping, please let us know when you RSVP so we can plan accordingly.

Wear good hiking shoes. Bring a sack lunch, water and a daypack.

SOUTHWESTERN INDIANA MASTER NATURALISTS ASSOCIATION BYLAWS

Article I – Name

The name of the organization shall be Southwestern Indiana Master Naturalists Association (SIMNA).
The permanent address shall be: in care of Wesselman Nature Society,
551 North Boeke Road
Evansville, IN 47711.

Article II – Purpose

In keeping with the mission of the Indiana Master Naturalist program, the organization is formed to bring together natural resource specialists with adult learners, to foster an understanding of Indiana’s plants, water, soils, and wildlife, and to promote volunteer service in the local community.

Article III – Membership

Membership is open to all people who have completed the Indiana Master Naturalist training, completed 30 volunteer hours, and have paid their annual dues. Please see the Indiana Master Naturalist Creed.

Article IV – Officers

President: The president shall preside over meetings, develop agendas, maintain regular contact with project chairs, serve as liaison with the Wesselman Nature Society Board of Directors, and have authority to sign checks.

Vice President: The vice-president shall help plan educational programs for meetings and help co-ordinate volunteers.

Secretary: The secretary shall take minutes and help prepare a timely newsletter. The minutes and newsletters shall be preserved for the organization’s archives.

Treasurer: The treasurer shall report at business meetings fiscal activities, collect annual dues in May, with the secretary develop a membership roster, and be responsible for all funds, including the authority to sign checks.

Article V – Elections

Officer elections will be held annually at the May meeting. All members present will be eligible to vote. Any vacancies in office may be filled by appointment by the remaining officers. The club year shall run from July 1 through June 30.

Article VI – Projects

The president shall recognize a project chair for each: Wesselman Nature Society, Howell Wetlands, and Canoe Evansville, and any such other projects for which Wesselman Nature Society shall be responsible. The chair shall act as liaison with those projects and keep the organization informed of volunteer activity, educational opportunities, and community needs.

Article VII – Meetings

The organization shall meet monthly on the third Monday, unless otherwise announced. The first part of the meeting will allow for speakers, with any business to follow. Members may add items to the agenda with advance notice to the president.

Article VIII – Dues

Dues will be collected from members to cover administrative supplies and speakers expenses as deemed possible. The organization will decide each May on the appropriate amount of dues and use of these funds.

Article IX – Dissolution

Should this organization cease to exist, all remaining assets of SIMNA will become the unrestricted property of Wesselman Nature Society.

Adopted this 16th of July, 2007 at the general meeting of SIMNA at Wesselman Nature Center, Evansville, Indiana.

Business

We opened the meeting with further discussion of the group's name, and then those present added their votes to those previously cast via email. When the count was finalized, the name chosen was Southwestern Indiana Master Naturalists Association, or SIMNA.

Eldon Scott has agreed to serve as the group's treasurer, so a motion was made and passed to accept the following slate of officers for the July 1, 2007 – June 30, 2008 SIMNA year:

Job Openings

Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve is adopting extended hours for the summer and fall, and is in need of people to staff the nature center in short afternoon and evening shifts. Beginning July 1, the nature center will be open 8 AM – 6 PM every day of the week, including Mondays. To apply for a position, contact Susan Haislip.

SIMNA Fundraiser

Keep Evansville Beautiful (formerly Operation City Beautiful) is looking for 4 – 5 Master Naturalists to conduct a litter survey of Evansville. Volunteers will need to be able to commit about twelve hours of work over 2 or 3 days. It has been suggested that the survey group meet on two or three Saturdays. Volunteers will visit several pre-selected neighborhoods by car, noting the presence or absence of litter in each area.

KEB will pay $250 to SIMNA for the project, which will be a great start to our treasury!

This project will not count toward Master Naturalist service hours.

Project Learning Tree Workshop

Do you enjoy the outdoors? Want to teach others about the outdoors?

Project Learning Tree is an award-winning environmental education program designed for educators, scout leaders, or others working with children in indoor or outdoor settings, outdoor labs, nature centers, or at the zoo.

PLT is a hands-on learning experience, so come ready to be actively involved! PLT instructs you how to help students learn about the world around them, their place in the world, and their responsibility for it. This PLT workshop is free through a grant with the Indiana Hardwood Lumbermen's Association.

Participants in this 7 hour class will receive a free PLT activity guide with over 400 pages packed full of information and activities relating to forest and plant ecology, biodiversity, air quality and more. Bring a sack lunch.

Bird Festival

In May of 2008, WNS, the Evansville Audubon Society, and Wild Birds Unlimited will team up to host a bird education festival. Stan Tekiela, author of Birds of Indiana, will be the keynote speaker. SIMNA has been asked to plan the children's activities for the festival. If you're interested in helping with the planning, the Bird Festival committee will be meeting at the nature center at 7 PM on July 10. Stay tuned for more details!

The next meeting will be held on Monday, July 16 at 6:30 PM at the nature center. Lois Schmidt will provide snacks, and we will be going on a night hike in Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve.

Hello again, everyone!

Here are the minutes and announcements from the May 21, 2007, meeting of the Indiana Master Naturalists group. It's a lot of info, but please take a few moments to read through it.

MEETING MINUTES:

( 1 ) Who Are We?

There was a discussion about what to name the group, but no consensus was reached. It was decided that a vote would be the most fair way to decide on a group name. Names that have been suggested are:

We will announce the results and formalize the vote at our next meeting.

( 2 ) Business

Susan Haislip would like to ask that anyone who has not yet turned in a volunteer interest survey, please do so ASAP.

Heidi Doss has not only agreed to serve as our charter Vice-President, but she has also already begun putting together programs for future meetings. Dr. Paul Doss has offered to conduct a geology field trip for us in August or September. Heidi has also offered to teach a one-hour program about how children learn, to help us learn methods for introducing young people to the wonders of the natural world.

The position of treasurer remains open at this time.

Dues for membership in the group were set at $25 per year.

Those present agreed that there would be no requirement for additional hours to be a member of the group. Requirements would be to pass the Master Naturalist class and complete service hours.

( 3 ) Guest Speakers

Vic Chamness, President of Wesselman Nature Society's Board of Directors, spoke with the group about the relationship between the Society and the Master Naturalist group. He thanked the group for their volunteer service, and invited Master Naturalists to attend Board of Directors' meetings to provide input and / or to serve on BOD committees.

The BOD has discussed last month's request for reduced Wesselman Nature Society membership fees for Master Naturalists, and the matter has been referred to the Board's Finance and Education Committees for further consideration. A BOD representative will attend the next IMN meeting to anwer any questions from the group.

Vic also talked about the exciting things that were in the works such as working with the city to plan and budget for renovations to the Wesselman Woods Nature Center building and a building at Howell Wetlands.

Group president Jane Magary asked Vic to pass the class members' thanks on to the Board and staff for the terrific instruction provided by staff during the Master Naturalist class.

Amy Brown, Program Manager for Canoe Evansville, gave a presentation about Canoe Evansville and Pigeon Creek. She answered group members' questions and shared a wonderful slide show.

Canoe Evansville's volunteer group meets at the Roca Bar on Kentucky Ave. at 6:00 PM on the first Thursday of each month, and all Master Naturalists are welcome to attend.

( 4 ) Next Meeting:

The next meeting will be held at 6:30 PM on Monday, June 18 at the nature center. We will be finalizing the vote for our group name, and Gena will give a short presentation on how to access and use the features on this website. Throughout the weekend, there will be wood carvers demonstrating their craft, leaf rubbing plates, identification books, and touch boxes with tree artifacts inside for people to feel in the nature center lobby.

There will be a training on Sunday, October 7, from 2:00 - 3:30 PM, where volunteers will learn how to measure a tree, where the Champion Trees are located within the preserve, the history of the Champion Tree program, about fall colors and how to lead a fall colors hike, and how to run the craft tables.

WWNP TRAIL MAINTENANCE

If you're out hiking the trails and have the time to do a little work while you're out, many of the trails needs a little bit of trimming. You can borrow a pair of clippers from the office, and just cut the overhanging vegetation back about 12 inches on either side of the trail. There are also several interpretive signs that need to be wiped down.

CANOE EVANSVILLE NEEDS OFFICE HELP

Wesselman Nature Society's Canoe Evansville program is looking for volunteers for the following tasks:

1.  One person with computer knowledge to maintain weekly contact with past canoe program participants. Approximately 4 hours per week

2.  One person to answer phone calls on Thursdays and Fridays and book Canoe program reservations. Approximately 8 hours per week.

3.  One person to prepare flyers and distribute them to grocery stores and other locations.

4.  Someone to answer the phone at the office and answer questions about canoe trips.

5.  Someone to send out email information on trip openings to people who have taken trips before.

Meeting Minutes
April 23, 2007

Congratulations on completing the course, passing the exam, and beginning your volunteer hours! The next step is to join our brand new association for alumni.

We held our first organizational meeting on Monday, April 23. There were 20 people in attendance, and many others expressed interest in future attendance. We had a very positive discussion about staying “loosely” associated, with many expressing an interest in continuing to have educational meetings. We settled on trying to meet monthly on the third Monday at 6:30PM.

There was much discussion on what to call our association, so we will vote on that at our next meeting. Gena Garrett graciously volunteered to be our Secretary, and help create this newsletter to keep us informed! And until someone else volunteers, Jane Magary will act as President. That leaves the jobs of Vice-President and Treasurer up for grabs! Here’s your chance to take charge of this charter association and set the direction for the future. The subject of dues will also be voted on at our next meeting.

Next Meeting: May 21 at 6:30PM at the Nature Center.
There is a rumor that we may even have snacks and a speaker!

2007 Meeting Minutes

Jane welcomed everyone and asked if there were any proposed changes to the minutes from the August meeting. There were not. Eldon Scott could not be at the meeting but Jane reported that the Association now had 10 paid members and a treasury balance of $500.

The WNS education committee is soliciting MN alumni input on test and course content in preparation for the next Master Naturalist class beginning in January. Suggestions were made including that there could be an essay component where participants actually perform observation and interpretation. Comments will be forwarded to the committee

Jane made the group aware that the Evansville Parks Department was asking residents to complete an online survey regarding their interests in Evansville parks and recreation. A number in attendance had already completed the survey and felt it was worthwhile. The survey can be accessed through the following website: www.usi.edu/parksurvey.asp
Lauren told the group that Fall Flutterby was a great success and thanked everyone that helped with the event. The evening insect hike was rescheduled for September 29th because of rain. She asked the group to think about more possible activities for adults during next year’s event. Some suggestions given included Monarch tagging, instruction on raising butterflies, and details on how to be a Monarch way station.

Jane distributed the new WNS Program Guide to give everyone a feel for the types of programs they might be asked to assist with in the future.

Susan shared that plans for the first ever Ohio Valley Birding Festival were coming along nicely and that members of the Steering Committee were very excited about this new event. A week of hikes, lectures, workshops and activities will focus on educating people about migratory birds and the importance of protecting and providing habitat to ensure their survival. The event would be held over a number of days, but primarily occur on the weekend of May 2-4, 2008. She asked that all interested Master Naturalists please reserve the date now because there would be plenty of opportunity for docents to assist during the festival. Committees will start forming soon. Those specifically interested in helping plan or assist with the children’s activity area were encouraged to attend the Flying Wild curriculum training to be held on November 17th. Those in attendance offered a variety of suggestions for activities and sponsors. Susan will forward these on to the Steering Committee.

Lauren gave an impromptu tour of the newly renovated raptor facilities. She’s very busy training docents and new raptors! Master Naturalists with an interest in becoming a raptor handler are invited to speak to Lauren about being included in the next raptor docent training class.

Our next meeting will be held at the nature center at 6:30 PM on Monday, October 15. Heidi has arranged for Chuck Price, Professor of Science Education at USI, to give a presentation on the USI Bluebird Trail. Dr. Price will begin his talk at 6:30 sharp, so don't be late!

Scott says: "The last afternoon Bird Banding Workshop that I offered had over 50 public participants who came to watch and learn! It was somewhat overwhelming, but great. I could definitely use help during the workshops by trained Master Naturalists. This is a hands-on workshop for all who attend, as they assist with banding, recording information, and releasing banded birds. Generally, only trained hands assist with removal of birds from the net due to the difficulty of removing them, this is where I need help!
This will also be excellent training so that you can assist with the Ohio Valley Bird Festival during the first weekend May of 2008."

Hello again, everyone!

Big thanks to Paul & Heidi Doss who hosted a great picnic at their farm.

Our geology field trip has been rescheduled for Saturday, September 22, and I will pass along the details as I receive them.

( 1 ) Business

Lois Schmidt provided wonderful snacks for the meeting. Thanks, Lois!

Eldon and Jane are working on getting a tax ID number for SIMNA, and will set up a bank account for the group. The bylaws have been amended to state that in the event that the SIMNA group dissolves, any remaining assets will be donated to Wesselman Nature Society.

The KEB Litter Survey has been completed, and SIMNA will receive $250 from Keep Evansville Beautiful for the brand-new treasury! Thanks to everyone who helped with the survey!

( 2 ) Bird Festival

Mark your calendars! The first-ever Evansville-area bird festival is being planned for May 1 - 4, 2008. Wesselman Nature Society is joining forces with the local Wild Birds Unlimited, the Evansville Audubon Society, Audubon State Park in Henderson, and SIMNA to create a birding education festival. SIMNA has been asked to handle the kids' craft areas, and there will be lots of volunteer opportunities associated with the event as a whole. Julie from Audubon State Park will be presenting a Flying Wild workshop sometime this Fall to help us gear up for the kids' programming. Stay tuned for more news about this exciting event!

( 3 ) Master Naturalist Geology Field Trip with Professor Paul Doss

Date: Saturday, August 11
Time: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Location: We will meet at the Doss farm (14501 Big Cynthiana Road) at 8:00 AM

From there, we will carpool to locations in the Hoosier National Forest. Tentative stops include Hemlock Cliffs Nature Preserve and a “world-class” roadcut at SR 37 and I-64. You/We will return to the Doss farm around 5:00 PM.

The option exists to camp somewhere in Hoosier (and the Dosses may choose to stay and camp!). If you are interested in camping, please let us know when you RSVP so we can plan accordingly.

Wear good hiking shoes. Bring a sack lunch, water and a daypack.

Project Learning Tree is an award-winning environmental education program designed for educators, scout leaders, or others working with children in indoor or outdoor settings, outdoor labs, nature centers, or at the zoo.

PLT is a hands-on learning experience, so come ready to be actively involved! PLT instructs you how to help students learn about the world around them, their place in the world, and their responsibility for it. This PLT workshop is free through a grant with the Indiana Hardwood Lumbermen's Association.

Participants in this 7 hour class will receive a free PLT activity guide with over 400 pages packed full of information and activities relating to forest and plant ecology, biodiversity, air quality and more. Bring a sack lunch.

Bird Festival

In May of 2008, WNS, the Evansville Audubon Society, and Wild Birds Unlimited will team up to host a bird education festival. Stan Tekiela, author of Birds of Indiana, will be the keynote speaker. SIMNA has been asked to plan the children's activities for the festival. If you're interested in helping with the planning, the Bird Festival committee will be meeting at the nature center at 7 PM on July 10. Stay tuned for more details!

The next meeting will be held on Monday, July 16 at 6:30 PM at the nature center. Lois Schmidt will provide snacks, and we will be going on a night hike in Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve.

If you'd like to volunteer to bring snacks for the August meeting, please let us know.

( 1 ) Who Are We?

There was a discussion about what to name the group, but no consensus was reached. It was decided that a vote would be the most fair way to decide on a group name. Names that have been suggested are:

Master Naturalists Association of Wesselman Nature Society

We will announce the results and formalize the vote at our next meeting.

( 2 ) Business

Susan Haislip would like to ask that anyone who has not yet turned in a volunteer interest survey, please do so ASAP.

Heidi Doss has not only agreed to serve as our charter Vice-President, but she has also already begun putting together programs for future meetings. Dr. Paul Doss has offered to conduct a geology field trip for us in August or September. Heidi has also offered to teach a one-hour program about how children learn, to help us learn methods for introducing young people to the wonders of the natural world.

The position of treasurer remains open at this time.

Dues for membership in the group were set at $25 per year.

Those present agreed that there would be no requirement for additional hours to be a member of the group. Requirements would be to pass the Master Naturalist class and complete service hours.

( 3 ) Guest Speakers

Vic Chamness, President of Wesselman Nature Society's Board of Directors, spoke with the group about the relationship between the Society and the Master Naturalist group. He thanked the group for their volunteer service, and invited Master Naturalists to attend Board of Directors' meetings to provide input and / or to serve on BOD committees.

The BOD has discussed last month's request for reduced Wesselman Nature Society membership fees for Master Naturalists, and the matter has been referred to the Board's Finance and Education Committees for further consideration. A BOD representative will attend the next IMN meeting to anwer any questions from the group.

Vic also talked about the exciting things that were in the works such as working with the city to plan and budget for renovations to the Wesselman Woods Nature Center building and a building at Howell Wetlands.

Group president Jane Magary asked Vic to pass the class members' thanks on to the Board and staff for the terrific instruction provided by staff during the Master Naturalist class.

Amy Brown, Program Manager for Canoe Evansville, gave a presentation about Canoe Evansville and Pigeon Creek. She answered group members' questions and shared a wonderful slide show.

Canoe Evansville's volunteer group meets at the Roca Bar on Kentucky Ave. at 6:00 PM on the first Thursday of each month, and all Master Naturalists are welcome to attend.

The next meeting will be held at 6:30 PM on Monday, June 18 at the nature center. We will be finalizing the vote for our group name, and Gena will give a short presentation on how to access and use the features on this website. Congratulations on completing the course, passing the exam, and beginning your volunteer hours! The next step is to join our brand new association for alumni.

We held our first organizational meeting on Monday, April 23. There were 20 people in attendance, and many others expressed interest in future attendance. We had a very positive discussion about staying “loosely” associated, with many expressing an interest in continuing to have educational meetings. We settled on trying to meet monthly on the third Monday at 6:30PM.

There was much discussion on what to call our association, so we will vote on that at our next meeting. Gena Garrett graciously volunteered to be our Secretary, and help create this newsletter to keep us informed! And until someone else volunteers, Jane Magary will act as President. That leaves the jobs of Vice-President and Treasurer up for grabs! Here’s your chance to take charge of this charter association and set the direction for the future. The subject of dues will also be voted on at our next meeting.

Next Meeting: May 21 at 6:30PM at the Nature Center.
There is a rumor that we may even have snacks and a speaker!
